People and their Passions.

People and their Passions is a straight-forward personal portrait project in which people talk about their over-riding interest, passion or obsession. Subjects of the photographs collaborate with the photographer to choose an environment in which to be photographed and then produce some text to accompany the final image. This is a continuing project and more portraits will be added as people come forward.

This is a place I've known and loved for a long time. The light always seems to be beautiful whatever the season or time of day. The high drystone walls suggest that people have valued this place for a long time and that it holds something very precious.

The arboretum and rhododendron gardens are special enough. But this is also the site of an ancient farm and the quarried stones tell us of the hard work and dedicated duty that people have invested here. The magnificent sequoias show that humans can enhance, not just degrade, the environment. The moss reminds me that Nature will always have the last word.

There is something about a garden that I find very calming
As if the plants themselves are emitting a vibrating energy
Stimulating my senses to ground my soul in the natural world
Bringing an inner peace to my inner world.

I kind of get excited having my walk because I have a disability. It's my challenge to go a bit faster.

I like to see the trees, grass and feel the fresh air on my face. I get my wheels ready, get my water and if it's hot my hat.

I'm off down the path.

Playing the piano has been a lifelong passion and - although I don't currently work in music - my passion endures. I've played the piano since I was 7 and can't imagine a time when I won't.

Playing the Elgar Violin Sonata, at last, is the culmination of a lifetime's fascination with his music. The Elgar uses a very full range of dynamics and almost the whole range of the keyboard.

It's been thrilling to rehearse and perform this piece; visionary, passionate and serene by turn.

Dancing in the forest,
moving and sensing become one.
In the quiet of the woods
I can find a renewed presence
in a spontaneous gesture.

Owen. Loughrigg, Lake District.
