People and their PASSIONS

Your invitation.

What’s your passion or obsession? What gives you joy? You are invited to collaborate with me in making a photographic portrait which documents that specific interest and provides an enduring record of where you are in your life today.

This page explains the project in more detail and provides an opportunity for you to take part.

  • The Project.

The working title is ‘People and their Passions’. I aim to make a minimum of 15 portraits in 2022 in which people demonstrate, illustrate or communicate their passion. Each image will be accompanied by text provided by the portrait subject. This is not a commercial project, but images may be shown within photographic societies, in social media, at exhibitions and made into a zine.

  • What's in it for you?

Firstly, you’ll have fun. If it stops being fun, we end the photo session. Secondly, you’ll get a free colour 8” x 12” giclée fine art print which you can frame or gift, and a digital version of the image which you can share on social media. Lastly, you’ll be helping me become a better photographer.

  • How does it work?

    1. We discuss how to represent your passion and choose a location where this can be demonstrated. At this point we can also agree how you might present - such as what you will wear.

    2. We agree a date for the photo session.

    3. If possible, I will do a test beforehand. if there’s not sufficient natural light in the chosen location at the chosen time, I will need to bring lighting. Choice of location will depend on how easy it is to access and whether we will have permission to shoot there.

    4. On the day of the shoot, we will take enough photos until I am happy with the outcome or we run out of time.

    5. You see a selection of photos within a week and receive your free print 7 - 10 days after that.

 FAQs

  • Nothing. Nada. Rien. It’s free.

  • Usually, we will be finished within the hour on the day of the shoot. If we choose a venue or location where the light is low and lighting is required, I may need to do a test beforehand. You may or may not be required for the test.

  • You will be asked to sign a ‘model release form’ which sets out how the photos can be used. We can discuss this in advance to agree permissions that you are comfortable with.

A model release is like a contract. It specifies all the ways the resulting images can or cannot be used. It protects both the ‘model’ and the photographer. You will have the opportunity to read the form prior to the shoot. It is signed by both parties before any photos are taken.

  • This is a photo you may keep forever and pass on to future generations! Giving some thought to how you present is worth the effort. We can discuss this in advance of the shoot - but the final decision is yours.

  • You will be able to view a selection of images via your mobile phone or on a laptop/PC. Normally I will deliver the images within one week of the shoot.

  • Yes.

  • It’s rare that professional photographers give up their ‘RAW’ files as all digital images need further processing once they have been downloaded from the memory card. You will receive a digital copy of any prints that you receive.

  • Yes. You will get one free 8” x 12” print. You can order additional prints up to 12” x 16” in size for £25 + postage if required.

  • Yes. You will have a digital file for each print. These should be shown in full, without filters or cropping. Providing credit to the photographer is encouraged.

  • I want more experience in making environmental portraits. An environmental portrait is a portrait made in the subject's usual environment, such as in their home or workplace, and typically illuminates the subject's life and surroundings. For this project, the environment is likely to be either an indoor or outdoor location which provides visual context for your interest.

This project is designed to make me a better photographer by providing me with a range of learning opportunities. These include compositional choices, venue selection, lighting different environments, matching image with text, travel and equipment logistics and editing workflow.
